This program provides students with an intensive knowledge and research skills for practicing contemporary political science. The objective of the degree is to prepare students for careers as political scientists in university, community college, government, or research settings.

The American Politics modules include POL 500 Seminar in American Politics; POL 601 Judicial Behavior; POL 602 Judicial Politics; POL 603 Legislative Politics; POL 604 Executive Politics; POL 606 Media Politics; POL 609 Southern Politics; POL 612 American Political Parties; POL 613 State Politics and Policy; POL 614 Political Participation and Voting; POL 615 Public Opinion and Political Psychology. The Comparative Politics modules include POL 620 Seminar in Advanced Industrial Democracies; POL 621 Seminar in Comparative European Government; POL 622 Political Development and Change; POL 523 Concepts and Theories of Comparative Political Analysis; POL 624 Asian Government; POL 625 Reform and Change in Post-Communist Political Systems; POL 626 Comparative Bureaucracies; POL 627 Comparative Legislatures; POL 628 Comparative Parties and Elections; POL 641 Latin American Government; POL 642 Quantitative Approaches to Comparative Politics. The other modules include POL 598 Special Topics in Political Science; POL 691 Seminar in Teaching (1 hour, pass/fail); POL 696 Advanced Readings; POL 698 Special Topics in Political Science (recent offerings have included International Organizations and Comparative Federalism); POL 699 Readings and Research in Political Science (Independent Study Projects); POL 697 Dissertation.

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, have a competitive undergraduate grade-point average, and have earned competitive scores on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Applicants whose native language is not English should have a minimum TOEFL score of 79-80 in internet based or 213 in computer based or 550 in paper based (or) IELTS score of 6.
