This program offers training that provides preparation for academic, research, and applied careers. The doctoral program is characterized by an intellectually stimulating and academically rigorous, yet supportive, environment. With a low graduate student-faculty ratio, the department offers students the opportunity to work closely with a dynamic, high-quality, research-oriented faculty that has a wide range of interests. Many times, students are invited to collaborate with faculty members on theoretical and empirical research. Students and faculty often work with community groups and government agencies to promote progressive social change. Students also benefit from a teacher training program; opportunities to teach a variety of undergraduate courses; funding for travel to professional meetings and close interaction with faculty in colloquia and seminars. The emergence of this field of study coincides with the emergence of sociology, which began as a science of social order and social change. The classical sociologists (Marx, Weber, Durkheim) all analyzed the development of modern industrial society and capitalism and the consequences of this transformation for the structure of societies and the behavior of individuals. The study of social change, development, and comparative sociology is fundamental to all sub- areas or specializations within the discipline as a whole. As a graduate specialization, this area focuses upon the processes and consequences of transformations in nation-states and in the entire world system. Graduate study in this area conveys the history, theories, concepts, and methodological tools necessary for both basic and applied research. The courses provide students with an understanding of the advantages and pitfalls of current theoretical and methodological approaches towards social change and development.

Persyaratan masuk bagi mahasiswa internasional

Students should have completed at least one year of full-time study in a degree program at a four-year US College or university. They must be a citizen of a country where English is an official language and the language of instruction in higher education. Students should have a GRE score of 1100 on the combined verbal plus quantitative. International students should have a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the internet-based Test (iBT) and a minimum test scores for each section: listening (15 points), reading (20 points), writing (20 points) and speaking (20/23/26 points). The maximum total score for the iBT is 120 with each section worth 30 points. They should have an overall band IELTS score of at least 6.5 and a minimum test scores for each section: listing (6.5), reading (6.5) and writing (6.5).
