The Department of Sociomedical Sciences is distinguished by its focus on the social determinants of disease and health. This is accomplished by examining the correlation between epidemiological trends and structural inequities in order to expose the fundamental social causes of public health events, including discrimination, stigma, and poverty. In 1968 the Columbia University School of Public Health became the first institution in the country to offer a graduate degree in Sociomedical Sciences (SMS). What began as a collaborative research project on rural health care in 1956, spearheaded by a physician, an epidemiologist, and a sociologist, evolved over a decade's time into a formal doctoral program. Dr. Jack Elinson, first head of SMS, coined the term "sociomedical sciences" to incorporate the social sciences of sociology, anthropology, economics, history, political science and social psychology, into a multidisciplinary study of health and medicine. A more recent addition to this academic framework is philosophy, especially relevant with the ever-increasing focus on ethics in medicine and public health. The Department's multidisciplinary approach provides students with a distinctive opportunity to examine health and health care issues from broad and diverse perspectives.

Mailman School of Public Health students (MPH, MS, DrPH, PhD) access housing information through the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) Office of Housing Services. If you live outside a 50-mile radius of the Mailman School, you were mailed a CUMC on-campus housing application packet after you confirmed your intention to enroll and/or paid your deposit. [Please note that the number of on-campus housing slots is limited. As a result, all students are encouraged to consider and pursue off-campus housing options]. Any Mailman School student may access off-campus housing referral resources through the CUMC Office of Housing Services. Attention students entering degree programs in early summer: because of particularly limited availability of summer on-campus housing, we encourage students to prioritize off campus housing options.
