This program teach students a wide range of problems from a structural and mechanistic perspective. Research in the department includes the mechanism of transcription and translation, chromatin structure, mechanism of antibiotic resistance, protein-RNA interactions, catalytic RNA, molecular chaperones, cell membrane recognition, cellular adhesion, evolution and mechanism of the immune response and theoretical studies of protein structure and dynamics. A broad spectrum of biophysical techniques, including x-ray crystallography, NMR, electron microscopy and computational methods is represented in the department. The graduate program strongly emphasizes research training. Students design their course program, typically a combination of specialized courses and core advanced courses in structural biology, biochemistry, genetics and cell biology to meet their educational goals. Students participate in an annual retreat which features research presentations by all the groups in the department. In addition, students attend seminar programs sponsored by the various biosciences programs.

GRE Subject Test encouraged, but not required, Three letters of recommendation are required. Foreign applicants whose first language is not English are required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) taken within the last eighteen months. Exceptions are only granted for applicants who have earned a degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association in the US, or the equivalent of either degree from a non-US college of recognized standing where all instruction is provided in English. The Department of Structural Biology offers a program of research and study leading to the Ph.D. degree. The emphasis is on understanding the structure and function of macromolecules through structure determination by X-ray crystallography, NMR, electron microscopy, theoretical analyses, and a wide range of correlative biochemical and genetic studies of function. Problems under study currently include molecular recognition by the immune system, cellular recognition by adhesion molecules, structure and activity of molecular chaperones, structure and mechanism of ribozymes, transcriptional mechanisms, and protein folding. The department is well equipped for experimental biochemistry and molecular biology. In addition, facilities available for structural and theoretical studies include electron microscopes, a diffractometer, a multiwire area detector and image plate for X-ray diffraction, several workstations with high-level graphics for molecular modelling and theoretical studies, a flow cytometer, a DNA sequencer, a protein sequencer and state of the art NMR facilities.

Stanford's graduate residences offer living environments for students diverse in background, language, culture, race, and religion. Residences serve as focal points of intellectual, recreational, and social interchange. Through its residence program, Stanford seeks to provide graduate students with a supportive, friendly environment where they are encouraged to develop a strong sense of community. Student Housing Rates are approximate and subject to change. The single student housing rates reflect the charge per person. All rates include utilities (except telephone, cable and Ethernet). There is no difference in rates for furnished or unfurnished apartments of the same type. Residents are also required to pay a house dues fee each quarter/semester. House dues are used for educational programs, social activities, and other services that are not included in room rent. Dues range from $20-55 per term. The board rate in the co-ops is approximately $500 to $800 per quarter. Students are billed rent at a constant per diem rate for the full University calendar year (September 1-August 31). Quarterly and semestral rates are quoted in full monthly increments, but bill will be based on specific contract dates. There are many dining options available to graduate students. Students living in co-ops must purchase their house board plan and participate in the preparation of meals. Students living in other residences may choose to cook for themselves if living in apartments or if they have kitchen privileges at Crothers or Crothers Memorial Halls, eat at on-campus or nearby restaurants and snack bars, or purchase a meal plan offered by the University.
