This concentration is designed for health professionals who would like to become leaders in public health, specifically in epidemiology and other related areas. The Department of Epidemiology coordinates this concentration. Graduates will be able to develop their careers in academia, public health institutions or health-care facilities. They will understand public health policies and practices, identify key elements for decision-making, and be able to plan and evaluate health systems and public health programs by using epidemiologic methodology. This concentration provides the expertise and experience to plan, develop, and evaluate epidemiologic surveillance systems. Students will also gain the epidemiologic knowledge and skills to be able to plan and conduct applied epidemiologic research as independent researchers or as members of research teams.

All applicants for admission to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences must meet the following requirements, whether or not admission to a specific degree program is sought: Applicant must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent with a major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or equivalent field from a regionally accredited institution. The applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the last 60 undergraduate semester hours of course work before receiving the bachelor's degree, or on all undergraduate work, in order to receive unconditional admission to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. All applicants seeking admission to a degree program are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The health science center requires an applicant from a foreign country to demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in oral and written English before being granted admission in addition to supplying official documentation of minimum scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. To be considered for admission, the applicant must file the following official credentials with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences: the $40 application fee and a $50 transcript evaluation fee, a written statement of personal career goals.
