The Operations and Decision Technologies Ph.D. program is directed to those primarily interested in a career of research, teaching, or high-level technical work in universities and private industry. Therefore, the program is designed to provide students with the scientific foundations of management science and operations management. The program is highly individualized to allow students to pursue their specific areas of interest. Examples of the disciplines studied include mathematical programming, decision analysis, network design and analysis, stochastic processes, queuing systems, inventory control systems, automated manufacturing systems, design and control of production systems, quality management and supply chain management. Typically, students enroll in classes during the first two years of the program. Then, students are expected to work closely with one or more Paul Merage School of Business faculty members (and when appropriate, faculty from other units on campus) on their dissertation. The program also emphasizes the importance of operations management to the overall business strategy and on the use of management science models and techniques in other functional disciplines. Therefore, students lacking a general business background may be required to take additional MBA classes during their first year.

Student who wants to apply for masters or doctors program should have finished their bachelor degree. An applicant must meet the minimum academic requirements: Applicant should hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California and have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0. International applicants whose native language is other than English will be required to demonstrate their English proficiency. This is most often accomplished by achieving a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and On the TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80 and a score of 7 on the IELTS.
