History and Social Studies Education Department programs ensure both a knowledge and an understanding of the foundations of human civilization, stimulate thinking about the evolution and interaction of ideas, develop facility with written and verbal expression, increase confidence in articulating ideas, and encourage the critical awareness of self so important to an educated individual. History majors are prepared for careers in business or government and for graduate study in history or law. Social studies education majors are prepared to teach social studies, including history, in both middle and high schools.

Living on campus provides underclassmen with opportunities to make friends and get involved in campus activities. Buffalo State offers multiple on-campus housing options that give the students a chance to learn, relax, and socialize. Many students who live on-campus find they have more time for studying, and learn more as a result. Some students are eligible to live off campus. Affordable off-campus housing is available within walking distance of Buffalo State. Buffalo State residence halls come in three distinct styles. Corridor-style residence halls offer a traditional hall setting, accommodating two students per room (a few singles are available on each floor), and feature a lounge on each floor as well as one on the main floor. Suite-style residence halls offer three to four student rooms connected to a small communal living area and a shared bath. In apartment-style halls two to four students share a bathroom, living area, and kitchen. All residence halls have non-smoking floors.
