The College of Engineering is ranked as the best public engineering school in New England. It has a physical plant of eight buildings, including the five-year-old ELab II with its gleaming laboratory spaces, research facilities, computer labs, and graduate offices. Enrollment in the College of Engineering has increased steadily in the last five years. The latest engineering-school rankings of the National Research Council place three UMass Amherst engineering programs in the nation’s top 35 and recent rankings from U.S. News and World Report list three of the graduate programs in the top 30. The College operates several national research centers. Through the centers and laboratories such as the Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory, students have the opportunity to participate in a thriving research environment.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst provides on-campus, off-campus and family housing. UMass Amherst residence halls provide forty-five residence halls and four apartment buildings that are grouped into six separate and very different residential areas: Central, Northeast, Orchard Hill, Southwest, Sylvan and North. Each hall possesses its own distinctive characteristics, inspired in part by location, architecture, and by the different cultural or academic living/learning programs housed within. Each residential area houses classrooms, recreational and social centers, kitchenettes, and cultural centers. The dining program provides students, faculty and staff with an array of dining options, ranging from self-serve buffet style programs in residential locations to retail dining and the finest in catering. All freshman and sophomores living in the residence halls are required to purchase one of the three residential meal plans. All other students may select any of the residential meal plans. Family Housing offers twelve studio apartments located in Lincoln Apartments offering total 185 one-bedroom and 124 two-bedroom apartments, which are all located in either Lincoln or North Village. Family Housing also has twelve one-bedroom apartments modified for the physically disabled. There are ten furnished one-bedroom apartments in Lincoln, which can be rented for an additional fee. To be eligible to live in Family Housing, students must be married, in a domestic partnership.
