Students in this concentration receive a solid background in the knowledge and skills required to participate in the writing, editing, and publishing (whether in print or online) of scientific, technical, and professional documents. Students who receive a grade of A or B in English 398 are eligible to enroll in English 498 (Senior Honors Thesis). The senior honors thesis allows a student in the honors program to work on an independent creative or research project under the guidance of two members of the faculty. In addition to a thesis on a literary topic, students may elect to write a creative thesis involving poetry, fiction, or drama. Students in the past have also proposed and completed honors theses in rhetoric and technical communications. In order to receive the designation "Honors" in English on their transcripts, a student must have a 3.0 GPA or better, a 3.5 or better GPA in English courses, and grades of A or B in English 398 and 498.

Freshman admission decisions are based on the following elements: Completion of the 14 required core academic subjects: 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics (2 units of algebra plus 1 of advanced math, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus), 2 units of natural science (including at least 1 unit of biology, chem-istry, or physics), 2 units of a single foreign language, 1 unit of American History, 1 unit of European history, world history, or world geography, 1 unit of visual or performing arts, A core GPA that is computed based on the 14 units listed above. Note: Course grades in these core academic subjects are weighted by UT to reflect enrollment in any of the following: Advanced Placement (AP): +1 point, International Baccalaureate (IB): +1 point, Honors: +.5 point, College Dual Enrollment: +.5 point, Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT). UT uses the standard ACT exam, without essay, and the critical reading and mathematics sub scores from the SAT exam for admission decisions. Other important factors include the Personal Statement, where an applicant provides further information that may, for example, address the applicants potential for success in college. Students should demonstrate English proficiency if native language is not English. This can be done in one of the following ways: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 523 on the paper-based test, 193 on the computer-based test, or 70 on the internet-based (iBT). Two semesters or three quarters of college-level English composition with a grade of C or better at an accredited college or university in the United States. ACT (English sub-score of 21 is required) or SAT (verbal score of 510 is required) for U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents. Scores must be received from the Educational Testing Service (copies are not acceptable). IELTS - a minimum score of 6.5. Completion of the University of Tennessee English Language Institutes (ELI).
