Environmental engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with protecting humans and the environment from adverse factors usually resulting from human activities. Environmental engineers design and supervise systems to provide safe drinking water and to collect and treat waste water. They work to prevent and control water and air pollution, manage solid wastes, and mitigate the effects of existing pollution.

Applicants for any of these master of science programs must hold a bachelor’s degree from a program that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology at the time of graduation, or provide evidence of an equivalent academic background to the Dean of the College of Engineering and the appropriate department chair. Applicants must submit an official undergraduate transcript, undergraduate grade point average, at least two letters of recommendation, and official results of the verbal, quantitative, and analytical portions of the GRE. The GRE minimum requirement for admission into a graduate program in the College of Engineering (both master’s and doctoral) is 1150. The GRE score is derived by using the following formula: Quantitative Score + 100 x 4/3 x Analytical Score. The GRE requirement may be waived for students holding degrees from ABET accredited programs (if the department approves). Applicants with a bachelor’s degree must have an overall grade-point average of 2.75 or better or 3.00 for the last two years (64 semester credits or equivalent). Applicants whose native language is not English must have a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, and also must submit their score on the Test of Written English (TWE). Applicants to the Department of Biomedical Engineering must have a TOEFL score of 590 (paper-based) or 243 (computer-based). Applicants who do not satisfy the requirements for Full Admission may be granted. Provisional Admission or Deferred Admission.
