The Department of Philosophy is a field of learning with a tradition reaching back many thousands of years, and it is an area of current, very active research. The study of philosophy at Syracuse University covers both its historical and contemporary aspects. The study of philosophy is perhaps the most liberal of the liberal arts, an ideal way to participate in the life of the mind. It expands one's imagination and deepens one's understanding of the culture and its history. It also develops skills for many careers and professions: the careful analytical reading of texts, the construction and evaluation of logical arguments, and the writing of clear, effective prose. Aside from preparing students for graduate study, an undergraduate philosophy major is an excellent preparation for law school, for government service or for a career in publishing. The curriculum of the department provides opportunities for concentrations in metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind, ethics, continental philosophy, logic and the history of philosophy. Considerable curricular resources, both within the philosophy department and in related departments, also provide for concentrations in which religion, psychology, law, social and political philosophy and language and linguistics are the focus of philosophical interest.

Graduate students have the option of living in University-owned housing on South Campus or in off-campus apartments or houses. Apartment-style university housing is available in Slocum Heights on South Campus, about two miles from Main Campus. Free shuttle bus service is available. These apartments are furnished, utilities are included, and one communications fee covers phone, cable and internet service. Apartment layouts, virtual tours, and associated costs are all available on the University's Housing. There are also numerous apartment complexes and rental houses that the graduate students choose to live in. Many are within walking distance or on the bus line.
