The Department of Linguistics at the University at Buffalo offers training in a broad range of sub-disciplines of linguistics. Students benefit from the faculty's research specializations in syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics, phonology, as well as language typology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and historical and contact linguistics. Areas of particular strength are:Syntactic and semantic typology;Semantics, including lexical/conceptual and formal approaches, and pragmatics;Field-based language documentation and description (particularly of languages of the Americas, Africa, and New Guinea);Psycholinguistics (including corpus-based, experimental, and computational modeling research);

The University at Buffalo offers students a variety of housing options. Students have the option to live either on-campus or off-campus. The residence halls are generally reserved for first and second year undergraduate students. The on-campus apartment complexes are reserved for our third and fourth year students. They also have designated on-campus apartment complexes for graduate students. The residence halls are located on both the north and south campus. There are five residence hall facilities on the South Campus: Clement and Goodyear Halls, which are two high-rise halls connected by a service area; Pritchard, MacDonald, and Schoellkopf Halls, which are four story residences. International students choosing to live on the South Campus should choose Clement Hall or MacDonald Hall as their first choice since those are the only two South Campus Residence Halls that remains open during term breaks. The North Campus has two housing clusters: the Governors Residence Halls and the Joseph Ellicott Complex. International students choosing to live on the North Campus should choose Red Jacket Quadrange or Clinton Hall as their first choice since they are the only North Campus Residence Halls that remain open during term breaks. The rooms are furnished with a bed, mattress, desk and chair, nightstand, dresser, and a lamp for each occupant. Rooms are equipped with Ethernet data connections for personal computers. Each room is with a telephone jack and is wired for cable television reception.
