Today, criminal law is an important and distinct specialty practice area. Prosecutors and District Attorneys (federal, state, and local) are public employees who prosecute criminal violations on behalf of the State. Criminal defense can be either private or public; public defenders are public employees who represent those accused of crimes, but cannot afford a private lawyer. Criminal lawyers are the ultimate trial lawyers. Of all lawyers, they are also the most likely to deal regularly with fundamental issues of security, personal liberty, and constitutional rights.

Students with U.S. bachelors degrees or equivalent degrees from institutions of recognized standing in other countries may apply for admission to Graduate Studies. Assessment of a foreign degree is based on the characteristics of the national system of education, the type of institution attended, and the level of studies completed. Graduate Studies requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if native language is not English or instruction has not been in English. The minimum score required for admission to graduate study at UC Davis is 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 68 for the Internet-based test and IELTS overall BAND score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.
