This program is to train medical scientists for positions in academic medicine. At least 10% of each Johns Hopkins Medical School class pursues the combined degree that includes both the standard medical school curriculum and graduate training through one of the basic science departments. Four of the Molecular Biology and Genetics faculty hold the combined degree and the department has trained over 20 M.D./Ph.D. students in the past ten years. Incoming M.D./Ph.D. students are encouraged to contact Molecular Biology and Genetics faculty members for information about research opportunities.

Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s (B.A. or B.S.) degree. They must be or have previously been in attendance at a fully accredited institution in the country where the academic work was completed. They must fulfill the following seven prerequisites: calculus or statistics (one year); general college chemistry (one year) and laboratory exercises (one year); organic chemistry (one year) and laboratory exercises (one semester); college biology (one year) and laboratory exercises (one year); general college physics (one year) and laboratory exercises (one year); and a minimum of 24 semester hours (or equivalent) in areas of humanities. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is required for all applicants.

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is one of eight basic science departments in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Throughout its history the Department has been at the forefront of basic biomedical research and has contributed to the training of many leading scientists. The Department began as the Department of Microbiology, established in 1959, with Dr. W. Barry Wood as its founding Director. The early faculty of the Department of Microbiology included virologists, bacteriologists and immunologists, a number of whom subsequently became Chairs of Microbiology at other American Medical Schools. The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics consists of nearly 200 people involved in cutting edge research on the function of biological molecules. The laboratories of the fourteen primary faculty occupy contiguous space in the Preclinical and Hunterian buildings. Nine secondary faculty with joint appointments in Molecular Biology and Genetics are located in other departments of the Medical School. The laboratories of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Department provide a wide range of opportunities in graduate and postdoctoral training. Over 50 graduate students from six different graduate programs are pursuing their doctorate in the laboratories of the Department's faculty. Additionally, more than 40 Postdoctoral Fellows from all over the world are pursuing advanced training in preparation for independent positions in academic or industrial research. A highly talented research and administrative staff contribute significantly to scientific progress and provide invaluable support for the research and teaching activities of the Department.

The Department of Housing and Dining Services believes that through group living, students develop important personal, social and interpersonal skills. They contain several divisions such as On-Campus, Off-Campus Housing and Dining Services. The On-Campus Housing is responsible for campus owned and operated residence halls and apartments. Contracts, room and board billing, room assignments, room selection, summer housing and the mail room services. The University-owned apartments are beautiful buildings located in the Charles Village community where students can enjoy various stores, coffee shops and restaurants while being conveniently close to the Homewood campus. Students live in efficiencies, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom or four-bedroom apartments, all fully furnished. The residence halls are either traditional residential hall style or suite-style accommodations. Besides a place to call home, these buildings offer a variety of amenities including game rooms, exercise rooms, computer clusters and dining halls. Dining Services is responsible for maintaining relations between the university and Aramark, the food service provider. University housing is provided to registered, full-time Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering undergraduate students. When a student graduates, withdraws, takes a leave of absence, fails to register full-time for the semester, or is academically dismissed, the individual will be required to vacate University housing immediately. Graduate students are ineligible for University housing.
