The department, like the university as a whole, combines two models - the liberal arts college, with a strong commitment to undergraduate education, and the research institution, dedicated to the creation of new knowledge. It seeks to integrate these two models to the benefit of undergraduates, graduate students, and the academic community at large. The department’s discipline has a special role in promoting historical consciousness, including the ability to think critically about events and forces that have shaped the modern world, to analyze and interpret sources and evidence, and to view issues from a variety of perspectives.

All residence halls are close to the classrooms, the dining halls, the fitness center/gymnasium and the libraries.
