This program emphasizes the interrelated nature of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and visually representing across diverse contexts with a wide range of sources including technological and informational resources, and works of literature. It also focuses on increasing educators' knowledge and promoting reflective practice through inquiry and the development of communities of practice that maintain a commitment to teaching for equity, diversity, and social justice. Candidates may focus on a variety of topics including language and literacy, children's and adolescent literature, language arts curricula, writing, and libraries, as well as early, middle level, and secondary literacy instruction.

Students applying for graduate programs should have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, submit results of a college entrance examination, either the ACT or SAT, and should have achieved a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or combined verbal, mathematics, and writing score of 1150 on the SAT. International students whose native language is not English should submit the official scores on the TOEFL exam with a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test, IELTS score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0 and have a grade of A or B on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
