Masters applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a 4-year U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized as an institution of higher education by the Ministry of Education in the respective country. The applicant must have earned a cumulative (overall) grade point average (G.P.A.) in all undergraduate courses of at least 2.50 (when converted to the U.S. 4.0 grading scale) for conditional admission and a G.P.A. of at least 2.75 for regular admission. Applicants with 12 or more graduate credits must have a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.00 and this G.P.A supercedes the undergraduate G.P.A.

The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences is one of the strongest in the Northwest, providing students with excellent preparation for careers in audiology and speech-language pathology. It is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The urban location of Portland State University allows a diverse array of off-campus practicum settings for students in the Speech and Hearing Sciences Program. Practicum placements are available in four hospitals, a medical school, hearing and speech centers, a child development and rehabilitation center, and infant hearing program, centers for multiply and severely disabled individuals, numerous public and private schools, and several private practices.
