This program is appropriate for anyone who plans to teach ESL or ELD at the college, adult or K-12 level; would like to teach English abroad; is interested in curriculum design, program administration, or textbook publishing; wants to learn more about language structure, language pedagogy, or second language acquisition; wants to upgrade a degree for promotion or salary purposes.

Modul program

The modules include Linguistics 550: Theory and Practice of Teaching English as a Second Language; Linguistics 652: Second Language Acquisition (Pre-requisites: Ling. 550, and Ling. 452, 552 or 554); Two classes (6 units) from the following courses in Applied Linguistics: Linguistics 623: Immigrant Languages; Linguistics 650: Materials Development for Second Language Teaching; Linguistics 653: ESL Reading and Writing; Linguistics 655: English for Specific Purposes and Content-based instruction; Two courses (6 units) required of all linguistics M.A. students: Linguistics 521 Phonology (prerequisite: Ling 420 or 520) or Ling.621 (prerequisite: Ling 521); Linguistics 622 Discourse and Syntax (prerequisite: Ling 522); Linguistics 795: Seminar in Linguistics (with Applied Linguistics content); Linguistics 740: Internship in ESL (for those with no ESL/EFL teaching experience); Completion of a thesis (Plan A) or comprehensive exam (Plan B).

Persyaratan masuk bagi mahasiswa internasional

Students should hold an acceptable baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association, or have completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by the graduate dean. They should have attained a grade point average of at least 2.85 in an acceptable earned baccalaureate degree, or at least 2.85 in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted, or hold an acceptable post-baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association. They should also have been in good standing at the last institution attended. In addition to this, international students should have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 550 or higher (using the paper version) or 213 or higher (using the computer version) or 80 or higher (using the internet version). Students must also obtain a score of 6.5 or better on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
