The Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh is committed to providing exceptional educational opportunities for its students and to shaping the direction of communication studies and practices in state, national, and international settings. It seeks to develop and synthesize new philosophical, theoretical, critical, cultural, and historical approaches to the examination of communication. It attends to symbolic action and public advocacy through diverse media with critical attention to history, culture, and rhetoric. It considers the ramifications of technologies for the production, dissemination, and reception of communicative artifacts. It shares a common commitment to intellectual and cultural pluralism, public issue awareness, and concern for social justice. Its research faculty is particularly strong in drawing on the past to understand the future of communication, and using future trends to guide historical study of communication texts, practices, and technologies. Recognizing that the past is always present, it sees history as a resource for understanding cultures as complex fields of communication. Studying communicative cultures as both tradition and legacy, it aims to make positive interventions into the public life streaming through them.

Students in their first year at the University are housed in the first year residence halls: Hemlock, Hickory, Laurel, Maple, and Oak Halls. These facilities are newly renovated and feature double rooms arranged in suites, meaning that two rooms share a semi-private bathroom. The first year residence halls each feature a card access security system that only allows the students who live in a particular building and University staff to access that building. The first year residence halls are located convenient to the Student Union. Students who return to campus after their first year are housed in the following housing areas: College Park Apartments, Living Learning Center, North and South Lodges, Townhouses and Willow Hall. These housing options provide an opportunity for returning students to live in a variety of settings, from apartment and suit style to more traditional double rooms.
