This program is well-suited for those with a background in either linguistics or computer science. It designed to be completed in 2 years, though that time line is best suited to someone with some background in either linguistics or computer science. With the growth of the internet and the increasing importance of speech applications in remote delivery of services, natural language processing (NLP), technology that helps computers process and understand language, has become increasingly important in commercial and government applications, and computational linguists are in high demand in both the private and government sectors, as well as in education. Being well-grounded in two disciplines, linguistics and computer science, computational linguists are also in demand in colleges and universities to teach courses in both linguistics and computer science.

Modul program

The modules include Linguistics 521 Phonology (prerequisite: Ling 420 or 520) or Linguistics 621; Linguistics 622 Discourse and Syntax (prerequisite: Ling 522); Linguistics 795 Seminar in Linguistics - with CL content; Two classes (6 units) required for Computational linguistics: Linguistics 581 Introduction to Computational Linguistics (prerequisite: Ling 571 or equivalent); Linguistics 582 Computational Syntax and Semantics (prerequisite: Ling 522 or equivalent); Two specialization classes (6 units) from the list below: Linguistics 571 Computational Corpus Linguistics; Linguistics 596 Selected topics in linguistics (with CL content); Linguistics 620 Advanced formal syntax. Introduction to unification grammar; Linguistics 654 Language and cognition; Linguistics 681 Statistical methods in computational linguistics; Linguistics 696 Selected topics in linguistics (with CL content).

Persyaratan masuk bagi mahasiswa internasional

Students should hold an acceptable baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association, or have completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by the graduate dean. They should have attained a grade point average of at least 2.85 in an acceptable earned baccalaureate degree, or at least 2.85 in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted, or hold an acceptable post-baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association. They should also have been in good standing at the last institution attended. In addition to this, international students should have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 550 or higher (using the paper version) or 213 or higher (using the computer version) or 80 or higher (using the internet version). Students must also obtain a score of 6.5 or better on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
