The Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh is at the forefront of innovation and excellence in English studies. Its internationally recognized scholars and writers offer courses in Literature, Composition, Writing, and Film Studies. Students may major in Literature, Writing, or Film Studies; or they can minor in Literature or Film Studies or earn a certificate in Children's Literature or Public and Professional Writing. With 72 full-time faculty, over 1,000 undergraduate majors, and over 170 graduate students, we are the largest department in the School of Arts and Sciences. In addition to these undergraduate majors, it offers an MA in English, an MFA in Writing (poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction), and a PhD emphasizing Cultural and Critical Studies, as well as master's and doctoral level certificates in Film Studies. The English MFA and PhD programs consistently rank among the very best in the country.

Students in their first year at the University are housed in the first year residence halls: Hemlock, Hickory, Laurel, Maple, and Oak Halls. These facilities are newly renovated and feature double rooms arranged in suites, meaning that two rooms share a semi-private bathroom. The first year residence halls each feature a card access security system that only allows the students who live in a particular building and University staff to access that building. The first year residence halls are located convenient to the Student Union. Students who return to campus after their first year are housed in the following housing areas: College Park Apartments, Living Learning Center, North and South Lodges, Townhouses and Willow Hall. These housing options provide an opportunity for returning students to live in a variety of settings, from apartment and suit style to more traditional double rooms.
