Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Process at SIUC is rather unique in that the Faculty come from a broad range of backgrounds and expertise. We currently have 17 Faculty members in the department with backgrounds in Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Fuel, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and other associated fields of engineering. With the exception of some laboratory classes, all classes in our department are taught by Professors and not graduate students. The specific topic of a class being taught is within the direct expertise of that Faculty member. This translates into better education and training and helps our students do well in their efforts to become professional engineers (licensed by the State of Illinois) and to obtain jobs. Currently we have about 300 students including 45 graduate students in our department.

Students from more than 54 countries live on campus at Southern. Provider value and respect different cultures and ethnicities and are proud of the diversity on our campus. International students live in either the residence halls or apartments, depending on their needs and eligibility. The residence halls and apartments are located on campus. The Saluki Express bus service provides transportation on and off campus to SIUC students. Two residence hall areas provide Housing during break periods: University Hall and University Park. All apartment areas provide break housing, depending on the length of students contract.
