Ringkasan program
This program combines interdisciplinary area studies and language with advanced communication studies. It responds to an increased need in both the public and private sectors for communication specialists with a thorough understanding of the culture, economics, geography, history, and politics of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The College of Communication and the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies offers this joint program. The graduate program in the Department of Journalism focuses on the acquisition of research skills and the study of theoretical issues. This program supplements journalistic skills acquired as an undergraduate with a rigorous program of research and intellectual pursuit. Entering graduate students are expected to have a journalism degree or substantial professional experience. Those who do not have this background may be required to take up to 12 hours of upper-division undergraduate courses. To fulfill the core requirements of this department, all students in the joint program must take Introduction to Research Methods, Research Methods Seminar, and Mass Communication Theory. The remaining nine hours of the core requirement and elective hours are chosen from among such graduate courses as International Communication Seminar, The Media and Urban Affairs, and Seminar in Media Law.

This requirement may be met either through formal language study or by passing a proficiency examination administered by a University of Texas faculty member. Students are encouraged to achieve the required level of proficiency as early as possible. Those with no previous knowledge of a Slavic, East European, or Central Asian language are advised to enroll in intensive language courses during the summer prior to beginning the joint degree program. Students who are native speakers of an area language will be required to learn a second language of the area.
