This department endeavors to provide students with excellent written and verbal communication skills, an awareness of and respect for diverse ideas and viewpoints, the ability to analyze and understand complex ideas and texts, an ability to invent, draft, edit, and publish both printed and electronic texts, a knowledge of the history of spoken language, written literature, rhetoric, and communication technology, the ability to collaborate on complex research and writing tasks.

This university provides housing for international students through four basic styles of living arrangements: traditional residence hall living (also called as high-rise style), suite style living, and apartment style living, Greek style living (restrictions apply). Housing and Residence Life's Facility Services Department offers various services that include: appliance rentals (micro-fridge and mini-fridge), conference services and university guest and intern housing, housekeeping services - for common areas (such as hallways and high-rise bathrooms), HVAC / heating and air conditioning services, locksmith and loan key services, maintenance services, pest control, plumbing services, project management. High-speed Internet service is provided to each resident by TimeWarner's Road Runner service. Students are strongly encouraged to install anti-virus and anti-spyware software as well as a firewall before coming to campus. Many of these software programs are provided free of charge by the University. Each residential area has washers and dryers for the use of residents. Students can use money deposited on their 49er Card in the laundry. There are no change machines in the Residence Halls so students should come with their own supply of quarters. Local telephone service is provided in each room as part of the fee for residential services in university's high-rise, suite, and apartment buildings. The university's Housing Technology Services (HTS) team is responsible for developing, managing, and delivering the technology solutions used throughout the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
