This program is focused on classes and small seminars in musicology and includes opportunities to study performance and cognate areas outside of music. It culminates in a thesis. Most students need two years to complete the MA in musicology. The master of arts degree in musicology can be the culmination of formal studies or preparation for doctoral study. Many students who have completed the MA at the University of Oregon have continued in Ph.D. programs in musicology at other major universities, or continued in the doctoral degree program on this campus. This program enables students to gain advanced knowledge and skills in music theory as well as in closely related area. Seminars in music theory provide extensive exposure to problems in analysis and the history of music theory. This well-rounded program allows students flexibility in shaping their studies within the degree focus. A thesis in music theory is required for the degree and is carried out under the guidance of a faculty advisor, who works closely with each student.

Modul program

The modules are performance studies, at least three terms 6, Thesis (MUS 503) 9, Research Methods in Music (MUS 611) 3, Appropriate ensemble, at least three terms 3-6, Choose four of the following: Music in the Middle Ages (MUS 660), Music in the Renaissance (MUS 661), Music in the Baroque Era (MUS 662), Music in the Classical Period (MUS 663), Music in the Romantic Era (MUS 664), Music in the 20th Century (MUS 665) 12, Three seminars in music history (MUS 507, 607) 9-12, One graduate course in ethnomusicology 3-4, One course in music history, theory, ethnomusicology, or approved area other than music 3-4.

Students must be a graduate of an accredited four-year college or university. Students must take an examination in music theory and music history before the first term of enrollment. Students must have a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 575 on the paper-based test or 88 on the internet based test or minimum IELTS (academic module) overall band score of 7.0.

The School of Music and Dance is nationally recognized for its dedication to the highest levels of excellence in teaching, performance, and research. It is the only music school in the state of Oregon authorized to grant master’s degrees in dance and doctoral degrees in music. The School of Music and Dance began as the Department of Music in 1886, then the School of Music in 1900. It was admitted as a charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music in 1928. The school was joined in 1991 by the dance faculty - which had been offering courses at Oregon since 1911, and which established a dance major in 1959 - and was renamed the School of Music and Dance in 2005. The UO music and dance departments are among the oldest west of the Mississippi. The University of Oregon School of Music and Dance has a threefold mission: to prepare students to lead lives enriched by the arts of music and dance; to provide comprehensive programs for those pursuing professional careers in music and dance, and a broad range of courses for those seeking a liberal arts education; to serve as an educational and cultural resource for the University of Oregon, the local community, and the state of Oregon.

Accommodation is provided at various residence halls such as Barnhart, Bean, Carson, Earl, Hamilton, Living-Learning Center, Riley and Walton. Room types ranges from Double which is available at Bean, Earl, Hamilton and Walton halls and cost of accommodation is $8211 per year, Double room with Sink is available at Carson hall only and costs $8610 per year. Enhanced double rooms is available at Earl, Living Learning Center and Walton halls and it costs $8610 per year, Deluxe double rooms is available at Barnhart and Hamilton and it cost $9805 per year, Enhanced Deluxe double rooms is available at Barnhart and it costs $12196 per year, Small Single rooms is available at Riley and Walton halls and it costs $9008 per year. Study lounges, television rooms, game areas, and laundry facilities are features in all the buildings. All rooms are furnished with a bed, desk, chair, blinds, wastebasket, recycle bin, and a closet for each resident. Most halls are single-gender by floor or wing, except in Barnhart, LLC, and Riley halls, which are single-gender by room. All buildings are nonsmoking. The highly rated dining program offers three meal plans as part of the room and board package; Deluxe Meal Plan - approximately nineteen meals/week-This plan is best for students who seldom skip a meal and occasionally treat a friend. Standard Meal Plan - approximately sixteen meals/week - This plan is the most popular, providing enough for meals and snacks throughout the week. Mini Meal Plan - approximately thirteen meals/week - This plan is designed for students who plan to eat a minimal number of meals on campus.
