This program is a terminal degree for students who are preparing for - or are already engaged in - careers in secondary school teaching. It does not by itself provide certification for teaching in New Jersey public schools. However, M.A.T. students are usually permitted to earn a portion of their program credits in graduate or advanced undergraduate courses in an approved Education Department, thus securing some of the education credits needed for New Jersey certification.

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution and favorable letters of recommendation from professors familiar with their work. An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 is normally required. Students must provide GRE scores. Degree Requirements a minimum of 30 credits is required, including 18 in a major field and 6 in a minor field chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor. The remaining 6 credits may be completed through a Master's Thesis or a combination of a Master's Essay and an additional course.

This department offers a wide range of excellent resources for the study of history, including: an outstanding faculty with nationally and internationally known scholars and teachers; a broad selection of undergraduate and graduate course offerings, with extensive coverage of major historical periods and regions, from the ancient Middle East to contemporary America, Africa, and China, and a unique undergraduate and graduate program in the history of Technology, Environment and Health/Medicine; opportunities for original research and writing, with particular emphasis upon the craft of historical writing; internships with the New Jersey Historical Society, the Newark Museum, and other local cultural institutions; eligibility to participate in teacher certification programs offered by the Education Department at Rutgers University, Newark; opportunities to share in the resources and facilities of both institutions, including the extensive library holdings of the Rutgers University system.
