The basic elements of urban place – buildings, land and people – are both philosophically and actually interdependent for their wellbeing and development. Accordingly, in this area of study each topic is investigated in relation to the others. The making of urban place, the factors that make it successful or not, and the future of urbanism, are examined from a broad range of perspectives including sociopolitical, legal, financial, educational, healthcare, infrastructural and cultural dimensions. Land planning, master planning, landscape ecology, housing and other design elements that form ‘urban consciousness’ – a phrase coined by former GSD Dean Jose Luis Sort – are studied in a variety of courses and research projects.

A bachelors degree or its equivalent, earned at a college or its equivalent either in the United States or overseas, is normally required for entrance to any of the graduate or professional schools. International students enrolled at Harvard University must be able to read English with ease, to understand rapid, idiomatic English as spoken in lectures and group discussions, and to express thoughts quickly and clearly in spoken and written English. A student who is not proficient in English at the time of application should not apply for admission. Applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an English-speaking university may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants should consult each individual school about test requirements and minimum acceptable scores.
