Ringkasan program
This program is innovatively designed to meet the new challenges of the profession. Students in the program are introduced to the roles and functions of libraries in contemporary society. They become familiar with key policy issues and technological trends, and with how these issues and trends affect libraries and information centers of all kinds. Students learn to manage and evaluate collections, respond to the information needs of patrons, and to use technology to improve access to information. Students who complete the program are prepared for careers in library administration, public services, technical services, reference services, and collection development at public, school, academic, and special libraries.
Modul program
This program module includes Foundations (15 credit hours): one course from each area. Each course listed is for three graduate credits. P means prerequisite. C means completed concurrent with the course, Assist and Educate Users of Libraries and Information Centers: S501 Reference (P or C: S401, formerly L524), Develop and Manage Library Collections: S502 Collection Development and Management (formerly L528), Organize and Represent Information Resources: S503 Organization and Representation of Knowledge and Information (formerly L505), Apply Management and Leadership Skills: S551 Library Management (formerly L527), S552 Academic Library Management (new course formed from L550), S553 Public Library Management (new course formed from L550), S671 School Media (P or C: S501, S571, and S574 or consent of instructor, formerly L553), Conduct and Analyze Research: S505 Evaluation of Library Sources and Services (P: S502, formerly L651), S506 Introduction to Research (P: S401 and completion of 9 credit hours in SLIS, S501 and S502 recommended, or consent of instructor, formerly L509), S519 Evaluation of Information Systems (P: S401, formerly L643), Specialization Core (9 credit hours), S504 Cataloging (P: S401, formerly L520), S533 Online Searching (P: S401, formerly L570), S554 Library Systems (P or C: S401, formerly L526), Specialization Electives (15 credit hours), Technology application courses selected from the following or chosen in consultation with the student’s faculty advisor: S511 Database Design (formerly L546), S516 Human-Computer Interaction (formerly L542), S532 Information Architecture for the Web (formerly L571), S541 Information Policy (formerly L563), S556 Systems Analysis and Design (formerly L545), S603 (SLIS technology-based workshops, up to 6 credit hours), as approved by advisor (formerly L595), S621 Audio and Video Sources (formerly L552), S652 Digital Libraries (formerly L566), Outside Courses: up to 6 graduate credits with advisor’s approval (see form), S605 Internship options for up to 6 credit hours are available and should involve application of technology skills. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree (equivalent to U.S) with a minimum 16 years of primary plus secondary plus tertiary education and have earned a university first degree, or have completed a university first degree that grants eligibility for graduate study in a recognized university in that same country, a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent in the total undergraduate program, or an average of 3.2 in the latest graduate degree or representative graduate hours completed with GMAT score of 31 in each area and minimum GRE score of 500 on verbal and quantitative and 4.5 on analytical International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based version), 250 (computer-based version), total score 100 (Internet-based version) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 112. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken.
