The mission of the Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Physician Assistant Program is to educate patient-centered medical providers of the highest quality who are leaders, life-long learners, possess an appreciation of ethical values and human diversity, and are provided a foundation to practice in every discipline of allopathic medicine. The Physician Assistant Program emphasizes evidence-based medicine, informatics, critical decision making, interdisciplinary teamwork, and continuous quality improvement. The following program goals support the mission of the Mercer University Physician Assistant program and seek to: provide an educational experience that develops a strong foundation in the basic, behavioral, and clinical sciences appropriate to an entry-level primary care physician assistant; foster an environment that encourages analytical thinking and the use of information technology to support patient care decisions and patient education; promote clinical decision making that considers the uniqueness of each patient; encourage self reflection in a manner that stimulates personal growth, accountability, and a better understanding of one’s strengths and weaknesses; cultivate a team responsiveness with physicians and other health care professionals to provide patient-centered care; advocate moral and ethical behavior consistent with values found and supported in the University’s Judeo-Christian heritage, while respecting the pluralistic values of our society; encourage graduates to accept leadership roles in their communities and profession; promote community involvement that encourages partnerships which seek to improve the quality of health care and service learning; equip each graduate to be an educator, patient advocate, facilitator, and counselor; and provide resources that will enhance the personal and professional growth of students, faculty, and staff in a mutually respectful community.

The modules include Human Anatomy and Lab 4, Clinical Physiology/Pathophysiology 3, Physical Diagnosis and Lab 6, Principles of Pharmacology 3, Clinical Decision Making (1, 2 and 3) 1 each, Medical Communication 1, Medical Ethics 1, Clinical Medicine 1 and 2 with Lab 8 each, Pharmacotherapy 1 and 2 2 each,Diagnostic Interpretation 1 and 2 2 each, Emergency Medicine 3, Concepts in Medical Science 4, Surgical Medicine 2, Electrocardiography 1,Behavioral Medicine 3, Evidence-Based Medicine 1 2,Clinical and Professional Didactic Year Credit, Advanced Cardiac Life Support -Clinical Medicine 3 and Lab 3,Evidence-Based Medicine 2 2, Medical Nutrition 2, Concepts in Health Care 2, Human Sexuality 1, Core Rotations (five weeks each) 5 each: Behavioral Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine Outpatient, Internal Medicine Inpatient, Orthopedic Medicine, Pediatric Medicine, General Surgery, Women’s Health, Elective Rotations (five weeks each) 5 each and Capstone Project 3.

Students must have earned an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university, Students must have earned a minimum overall undergraduate quality point average of 2.75 on all work attempted, Students must present a minimum score of 800 on the GRE (excluding the analytical section) or 397 on the Millers Analogies Test, Students must submit a written autobiography including career goals, Students seeking admission to the Counseling degree must attend an interview by the departmental admissions committee as the final step for admission, Students must submit two official transcripts of all college work attempted.
