This program in nutrition and dietetics is designed to prepare students interested in community nutrition to work as registered dietitians in a variety of public and private health organizations in county, state, and government agencies or as patient-care dietitians in hospitals and other health-care settings. The courses which include are Macronutrients, Micronutrients, Biostatistical Analysis, Maternal and Child Nutrition, Behavioral and Social Aspects of Public Health, Health Services Management and Strategic Management in the Hospitality Industry. In addition to this, must complete courses in Food Systems Management , Introduction to Medical Nutrition Therapy, Community Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy.

Applicant should have a baccalaureate or higher degree, prior to the start of the NIU term for which the student is admitted, from an accredited U.S. college or university or the equivalent degree from a recognized foreign institution. Applicants must have completed a Didactic Program in Dietetics with specific prerequisite courses including general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or bacteriology, general or human biology, human physiology, science of nutrition, applied nutrition, nutrition in clinical care (2 semesters), principles of food preparation, and statistics. Applicants who are also applying for admission to the Dietetic Internship must have completed a Didactic Program in Dietetics. Student’s whose baccalaureate degree was in a field other than dietetics, should consult the Coordinator of NDHA to identify deficiencies and develop a plan for their removal. The minimum admission standards include at least a B average in the prerequisite courses. Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores are required. Students may enroll as students-at-large prior to final admission to the program.
