Ringkasan program
The Ph.D. program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing advanced studies in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research in Columbia University. Graduates from the program have pursued careers in academia, research, and industry. The department provides academic and funding support for its students. The Ph.D. program in IEOR is highly selective. In a typical year, there were over 300 applications for eight to ten new doctoral students entering the program. Thus, doctoral students are admitted with the expectation that student will be able to successfully complete the program and bring credit to themselves, the discipline, and the department. Consistent with these expectations, admitted doctoral students are required to meet high standards. Students entering the doctoral program must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: Linear Algebra (i.e., Math V2010 or APMA E3101), Real Analysis (i.e., Math W4061), Probability (i.e., SIEO W3600, SIEO W4150, or SIEO W4105), Statistics (i.e., STAT W4107, STAT W4109 or SIEO W4150), A programming language (e.g., C, C++, PASCAL, JAVA; either a course or substantial use in some project).

Competence in written and spoken English is extremely important to be an effective researcher and is expected of each doctoral student in SEAS. Thus doctoral students with deficiencies (usually because English is not their native language) are expected to improve their English language skill. Students who completed their undergraduate degree from countries where English is not the official spoken language, are required to take the English Placement Test at Columbia University. All doctoral students must eventually achieve level 10 on the English Placement Test, administered by the American Language Program at Columbia University.
