The MBA at Exeter was crucial to my successful change of direction. I'd completed a BEng in Civil Engineering at King's College London, but I was more interested in business and finance. I also fancied a change of scenery for my postgraduate studies. A part-time MBA meant I didn't have to stop in my tracks and take too much time out from work. Plus, the programme and the people teaching it really got me thinking about markets in all sorts of different ways. It gave me the ability - very early on - to analyse complex business issues and think strategically, and I still use these skills almost every day.
The Exeter MBA programme has excellent links with business, so I could relate everything I was learning to real-life situations while I was studying. I think such links are really important. Even on the part-time programme, the Business School made sure we had time to visit a good cross-section of local businesses.
The best part for me was spending three months with a manufacturing business in Surrey as part of my final year project. As well as seeing the internal workings of a growing company, I helped them develop a successful strategic plan. Meanwhile, I was developing my own ideas for the future, and thanks to Exeter, it's worked out.
