It was a scientific exchange program in which 14 of us were selected. The program was very well structured. There were regular meetings with Indian Professors at the university, Officers of Indo-US science exchange, Indian graduate students, Deans of various departments, Indian Consulate General in Chicago, Eminent Indian journalists and Industrialists in Illinois and Wisconsin area. I would suggest if a student gets a chance to do research at UW-Madison, he should definitely go for it.
It was a scientific exchange program in which 14 students were selected. 10 of us went via the same BA flight from Delhi. We landed at Ohare International Airport, Chicago. The airport is around 3 hrs from the university. One carry bag was allowed and two luggage bags of weight less than 32 kgs each. No one crossed the weight limit hence we didnt have any problem. We didnt face any immigration issues. They stamped our DS 2019 form and allowed us to go further. As we were 10 people and one of us had been to UW-Madison previously as well, so she directed us about how to catch the bus to Madison from airport. Program co-ordinators came to pick us up when we reached Madison city.
The program was very well structured. We also visited Research Park the big entrepreneurial venture of the University. Faculty members were really nice. Lab mates were very supportive and the environment was academically stimulating. We did attend various guest lectures by noble prize winners and other eminent scientists. Lectures halls were really good. Yes we did have access to library and sports facilities. All libraries were state of the art. There were three sports complex with sports and gym facilities. People were really sportive and health conscious as there was always a lot of activity in sports complexes. All equipments were available and there were instructors too to guide everyone. It is a very good place for further studies.
We lived in university dorms. They were single room accommodations with facilities like AC and refrigerator. We had a common kitchen with oven, stoves and all utensils to cook our food. General social scene was very amenable. People worked hard and partied hard, and they were very nice and helpful. We didnt witness any kind of violence or imbroglio. Night life was very vibrant, with lots of bars and discos. Specially during weekends one could find a lot of people drinking and enjoying at various hang out places like lake terrace, memorial union and state street. We went in summers and weather was quiet sunny and warm during day time. In nights though it was little cold. There were a few tornado warnings but it never came. Over all it was a nice weather during summers. But we heard that during winters its very cold and university is snow covered for almost whole winters. The city is very beautiful and peaceful and was named one of the best places to live in US. Apartments are easily available for students. There are lot of Indian students and an Indian Student Graduate Organization which helps new Indian students.
