I graduated a couple of years ago, but I loved it. I suppose the areas in which the college could use some improvement are its size and its notability, but neither of those negates the fact that this is a very good school. I know of several graduates who have gone on to graduate work at Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, and MIT, so it's certainly "up there" in educational quality. One of my childhood friends was in my class at Eastern Nazarene and is now at Harvard with a full scholarship and stipend. My wife graduated two years after I did and makes over 70,000 per year at her first job. The environment was good, too. It had any of the pitfalls one might expect at a college (get tired of the food, get a bad room-mate one year) but it's not a "party school" at all. The professors were not only brilliant but very nice, and concerned about me as a person. It's also less than a kilometre from Boston's subway system, so you can easily go anywhere in Boston.
They won't take just anyone, but like I said, not too many people have heard of the school, so it's not like people are breaking down the doors to get in. It's not open admission, but they're rather lenient because it's a "teaching college" and focuses more on teaching all students than selectivity.
They give scholarships even to people with low past academic performance, but they offer free rides to some with very good academic performance. I was high-to-middle and my scholarship reflected that.
The history program is one of the best there. It's also linked with the pre-law program, which has had a 100% acceptance rate into law schools since it began. The department has close ties to places like Boston University, as well as other programs in the United States. The professors were excellent, published and renowned, but were very personable and always willing to help when necessary. It was certainly worth the effort, and the requirements were rigorous. I even had to write a thesis paper the likes of which one writes for a master's degree.
The campus is beautiful, and it's a great location. The campus could've been a little bigger, as I said, but it's at least a close community. The city, Quincy, is right next to Boston (seems New England cities can border each other, unlike the rest of the country) and connected via the subway. The campus is also very close to a beach and the ocean, so it's very scenic. The dormitories are not like expensive hotel suites, but perform their function well. I had both good and bad roomates, and lived in more than one dormitory. Finding a job was easy with so few students. I held about 3 different positions. I liked them all at first, but the last two were my favourite. The third was like a promotion from the second. The Student Government Association wasn't very active, but there was plenty to do on one's own off-campus around the entire Boston area, so I didn't mind.
I keep in touch with classmates all the time. I even keep in touch with people I met who I didn't go to school with at the same time. I also keep in touch with professors about career opportunities and graduate school. I am training to be a teacher in low-income public schools until I attend graduate school while my wife works full-time for the government. A lot of people go to very good universities for graduate school after leaving Eastern Nazarene.
