Keep your basics strong in whatever field you may be and do not underestimate yourself.
I just took the TOEFL exam and I did not take any coaching for this exam. I did some practice tests on the net and few CDs that are given with the books. I did not hire any counselor. I did need a students visa and though the interview was easy but there was too much paper work. Ticketing was not an issue at all. There are plenty of flights and deals available online. I flew by American Airlines. The flight was good. I liked the in house entertainment. I dont remember if I was offered a student fare. I landed in Newark, NJ. I wasnt given excess baggage. It was 23kg+23kg.No immigration issues were faced. I was glad to have the Meet and Greet at the airport.
There are no scholarships.
I am pretty happy with my program. The professors are great but there is always room for improvement. The lecture halls and library are mediocre.
For the first semester I lived in university dorms. It was okay. Little expensive but good for a fresher. Then I lived off campus. Sports facilities are decent. Part time jobs are easy to find. I had one. Social scene and nightlife is okay. The weather is extreme winter and humid/hot summer. Yes there is an international society. They conduct diwali, holi celebrations.
There is a placement cell at the university, but in USA placements are different as compared to India. In US universities, there are job fairs and you have to earn your own interviews. It is not easy for international students to get jobs, as there is limited number of h1b visa. Also now since the economy is bad, it is really hard to get jobs. Campus placement is all about on campus job fairs and earning your own interviews. On campus job fairs occur 5-6 times a year depending on your major. I am just going through work permit now. But I would say this varies from candidate to candidate. There is an active alumni but I am not sure if they handle placements.
