My advice to aspiring students is 'Be focused'. Before selecting your courses speak with your advisor. Do your research about the path you want to go in for.
For the admission process, GRE and TOEFL scores are mandatory. I studied for 2 months. I did not attend any coaching classes. We need F1 Visa i.e: student's visa. Interview was ok. They didn't ask me anything as I was well prepared and had taken all the necessary documents along with me. I came to US by Delta. Getting a ticket is pretty easy for this airline. They do not have any student's concession for air fare. I landed at San Diego International Airport. Distance between airport and my university is 12.5 miles which takes approximately 13 to 15 mins depending upon the traffic. Baggage rules are 2 cargo bags weighing 23 kg's and 1 check-in weighing 8 kg's. Even if the baggage limits exceeds by 1 or 2 kg's, airport authorities do not trouble us because we are on F1 visa. I did not face any immigration issues. My university had arranged for 'Meet and Greet' service at the port where a senior comes to pick us up and take us to the university.
Program structure here is organized in such a way that we are able to adjust to this new format very easily. I never felt the load and was able to concentrate properly on my course. Professors are very helpful and cooperative. Lecture hall is fully equipped with projectors, LCD displays. We have a huge library. All kinds of books are available. There is a provision to get books from other universities also.
I used to stay with my friends in a apartment nearby to my university. University accommodations are very costly. Part times jobs are easy to get for any students. Weather here in San Diego is pleasant. There is a international students society in our university which handles Immigration advising, employment authorization, academic support, housing referrals, tutoring, counseling.
We have a placement office which makes connections between the skills, talents & interests of students & the internship opportunities offered by different agencies. Currently it is a bit tough to get a job because of recession but I was able to get calls from 3 to 4 different companies. There is an alumni society in our university campus which takes care of health & human services, placements. It is an active network which updates us with different activities happening around us.
