I am from Exeter where I went to West Exe Technology College, before going on to Exeter College where I studied AVCE Travel and Tourism, AS French and AS Business Studies. I chose to study on the BSc (Hons) Tourism and Hospitality Management as programme as I have always enjoyed working with people and was interested in travel. I spent a lot of time in the Business Schools' computer suite; it is such a friendly environment, I think my course mates and I used it as a haven, there was always someone there to chat about any pieces of coursework or grab a cup of tea to relive the stress and pressure that we were all under. Every single one of my lecturers was so supportive, their doors were always open, not only for advice but also to remove any worries about progress, performance or if you had any difficulties with any particular modules.
University certainly helps you grow as a person, it does not just broaden your employment opportunities, but it gives you an insight of so many different aspects of life today. I believe that the support from lecturers, nurtured my ambition and I would certainly consider returning to the University of Plymouth to study a Masters degree. Nothing can compare to the satisfaction of receiving your results to know that all the hard work paid off, to reflect on the good and the bad times, to smile and think I did it and I am so proud.
I chose to take a year out rather than undertaking a work placement. I do not regret taking a year out as I believed I needed this time to determine my future goals. I also believe that this time reinforced the importance of a degree and the opportunities that it could provide. I believe I was more dedicated to achieving the best of my ability in the final year. I am currently employed on a Graduate Accountancy Programme at Jury's Inn Plymouth & Exeter hotels, where I am studying for the CIMA qualification. I decided to take this route as I simply did not want to give up learning; I always look for a new challenge and believe that this opportunity could feed this hunger for knowledge.
