I am an anthropologist and documentary filmmaker. I had never left my native Russia prior to the age of 17. I then migrated to the United States. My educational experience in the US sparked my burgeoning fascination with cultural alterity. I have since visited about 40 countries while managing to squeeze in various university degrees. Over the last ten years I have worked and studied in India, Russia, France, England, the US, and have spent extensive periods of time traversing both North and South Asia for my fieldwork, films, and drifting.
I completed M.A. in Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester in 2001 and M.A. in Anthropology at New York University in 2005.
I am a recipient of the Fulbright-Institute of International Education Fellowship and the Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant. This has enabled me to do research in India and Siberia.
I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology at the New York University. My research and teaching interests are North Asia, India, Siberian/Mongolian shamanism, transnational Tibetan Buddhism, visual anthropology and ethnographic film, religion, indigenous peoples, globalization, cultural production, nationalism and performance. I have also been working as a part time teaching assistant at the New York University, Department of Anthropology since 2004. I have designed and led two interactive discussion sections a week, graded papers and exams and advised students on research projects.
