Virginia tech is a very good school for engineering. It has got good industrial connections and best part about it is that the fee is pretty affordable. My program was structured in a way that it gave me both the flexibility to choose the courses I wanted and also the basic courses that would be required to strengthen the basics of my discipline. I was pretty happy with that.
I had to write GRE which was a compulsory exam that was required for Masters program in the USA for which I prepared on my own. I did not attend any class. Though I did use the standard GRE textbooks like big book and the red book, I did not use any counselors help. It was easy to get my VISA as I had enough funds to show to the university that I went to. It was easy to get the tickets too. I flew through Lufthansa/United airways. Trip was not bad. There was no student fare. I landed in Roanoke, Virginia. My university is 30 miles away from the airport. It takes 45 minutes for us to reach the airport from our university. We were allowed to carry 2x23 kgs in check-in and a 1x7 Kgs in cabin baggage along with us. I did not face any immigration issues. There was a member from the Indian Student Association of Virginia Tech to pick me up form the Airport.
There are 3 types of assistantships namely Graduate Assistantships (GA), Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA) and Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) which offer complete and partial student tuition fee and also monthly pay.
I was pretty happy with the way my program was structured. It gave me both the flexibility to choose the courses I wanted and also the basic courses that would be required to strengthen the basics of my discipline. Some of the professors are very professional and well known in their field and they are good teachers too and offer very good assistance and help when approached but some are very moody and pretty difficult to approach. Lecture halls are very well equipped and possessed highly sophisticated equipments such as projectors electronic drawing boards and surrounds sound speaker systems. All can accommodate a minimum of 25 students comfortably. We have 2 huge sports facilities which are well equipped.
I lived in off campus housing. It was a private housing firm. Regarding jobs it is very easy to get an on-campus job. Wage positions are a little difficult. You have to be on the lookout for these jobs on the emailing lists. The social scene in my university is very good. You get to interact with many international students. Significant number of Asian population is present. There are lot of international events like International street fair and also international dance room parties organized by it. Also every country specific organizations get funds to celebrate some of their countrys popular events on a grand scale E.g. For Indians its Diwali. Night life is not bad, it has a very small downtown, every Friday nights and Saturday nights turn into party nights but only for the Undergrads mostly. Grads do not participate so much.
We have a huge placement cell. One dedicated for computer science dept alone. Its pretty easy for the international student to get jobs. 90 to 95% of them find jobs out of which almost 60 to 75% get from campus placements. We have a huge career fair that runs for 2 to 3 days and some events over the evening during the month of September and October for fall semester and February and March for the spring semester. Work permit process is pretty strict lot of companies do not sponsor work permit too. The alumni is pretty strong in the university. Alumni do not help in getting the placements directly but they do help indirectly i.e. through recommendations.
