I previously worked as an education consultant in Nepal, and I worked with universities from all over the world. I had a very good knowledge of UK institutions and this is where I first came across LJMU. In addition, a friend of mine who was already studying in LJMU also recommended the University.
When I decided that I wanted to undertake a PhD, I was open to the idea of going to the USA, Australia or the UK. However, after I researched the universities I really liked the Education Faculty at LJMU. I received excellent support from them throughout my application, and Gill Broadhurst (Head of International Recruitment) provided a lot of information and contacts for me. I then travelled to Europe so that I could meet the academic staff and get a feel for the University. I really liked the University and the staff and I felt I could achieve my goals here. In addition, I was able to secure the University Chancellors Award for the first year and the highly competitive Overseas Research Student Award Scheme for the following years of my study.
The staff here are all extremely well educated, not just in my faculty but all around LJMU, which is a big help when you are settling into a new educational environment as well as culture. The facilities are really good and there is a lot of support available.
I live quite near to my university building as well as the city centre, so it is quite convenient for me. Before I came over I decided to bring my family, and Hamida Melaine (International family support officer) was really helpful in finding a suitable school for my son. I enjoy socialising with friends and going out for meals with them. I live by an area called Lark Lane, which has many different types of restaurants such as Thai, Indian and Chinese food, so I enjoy going there. I am also a student representative in the faculty research committee, which offers me a good opportunity to socialise with professors and other academic staffs. Currently, I am also leading an initiative to bring all research students in the ECL faculty together so that we could learn each others academic and professional experiences. We hold monthly meetings and organise research seminars. Yes definitely, Liverpool is a very affordable city for students, historically beautiful and there are lots of opportunities for part time work. With Liverpool being the City of Culture it is very prosperous, and LJMU provide a lot of support for students as well as an excellent education.
