My fascination with the sea began when I was a child and I sailed at weekends with my uncle at a local yacht club. I found a degree in Cruise Management in Plymouth but this was a lot further south than I had originally planned! After lengthy discussions with parents and tutors I contacted the university directly. The friendly help and an invitation to attend a ship visit sealed it.
To begin with I struggled juggling my health post-glandular fever with the academic demands of a degree course and socialising in my new found home. However, all my tutors and in particular Philip Gibson have been a fantastic source of knowledge, guidance and advice. With support from the university, I was able to take my first year over two years and due to improved health progressed to complete my second year in one year. The next hurdle was a placement year.
My health was improved beyond what I was told I could expect so I investigated the possibility of undertaking a placement year with one of the courses two main sponsors P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises. This involved applications and interviews in Southampton. The hardest part was the waiting to find out if I was successful, luckily for me I got offered potions with both companies! After much deliberation I decided P&O Cruises would be the more suitable opportunity. My placement was a fantastic experience.
