My knowledge of the English language made me decided that the UK was the most suitable EU country for me to travel to, its location - being reasonably close to Latvia with good airline connections also helped. I chose to come to Plymouth because of its southern location and soft climate.
I worked for a year in a number of different organisations as an administrator, during which time I developed a number of business skills. While working in customer relations I met a lot of students from the University of Plymouth and I got to know about the university and the postgraduate studies it offered. So, evaluating my needs and the potential it offered, I decided to continue my education here in Plymouth! I was confused about the variety of postgraduate programs – business, finance and international shipping. I collected information about the programmes from the university website and brochures; I found the staff very helpful at the university Graduate Office as well. The most suitable postgraduate course for me was the MSc Finance programme, because it combined all my interests. In August 2006, I was offered university assistance and attended a pre sessional course, which is designed to help international students understand about the UK educational system, student life, differences in academic rules and much more. The university also helped me as I studied – I got a lot of support from lecturers, the careers service, ELSIS staff and international advisors. I did find it challenging – in the beginning, during the time I was working and living in Plymouth, prior to coming to university, I found I did have some problems with cultural differences - as well as atypical foodstuffs - which led to a change in nutrition for me!
Studying, I faced challenges caused by the dissimilarity, in academic rules, between my country and the UK - but I did get a lot of support from my programme manager. I am currently undertaking my dissertation and getting ready for more work experience in the Finance sector in order to develop my career. During the time studying at Plymouth I have developed a new range of academic skills - including analytical and organizational knowledge, which I consider to be the most important for my future career in Finance. Studying in Plymouth was an exciting international experience for me. I met wonderful people and found out about a variety of other cultures by meeting other international students. I really appreciate that I had the opportunity to be a postgraduate student of the University of Plymouth.
The university campus is full of facilities which make the studying process comfortable and fascinating. Moreover I was always welcome to take part in sport activities as well as in trips, organised by the university. This made my student life varied, absorbing and memorable.
