One of the main reasons I was interested in doing an MBA in the first place was because I had started to feel I was a bit stuck in one field of interest. Doing the full-time course meant that I was one of only two British students, so I wasn’t just getting the chance to make connections in other sectors, but was also getting an international perspective. We were such a multicultural group of students, it was an amazing experience, truly enriching. The MBA certainly stretched me, and now I know I can push further and broaden my horizons.

Getting married, giving up work, and starting the course at Glasgow University. It was a lot of life changes within a few weeks. The course was certainly a baptism of fire. I think we had our first exam within a month. Yet completing the MBA at Glasgow has given me such immense personal satisfaction. You see how it affects fellow students as the course progresses. There is a real sea change in everyone’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Before, if I saw a job at a higher managerial level, I would think it wasn’t for me. Now I feel competent and confident about possible challenges. It's very exciting.

I think one or two people thought the course was going to turn me into some kind of hard-nosed businesswoman. But the MBA isn’t really about that. In fact, completing the University of Glasgow programme actually reinforced my commitment to the public sector. Some people might use the MBA to transport them into a completely different area, but I’m hoping it will eventually lead to a more senior role, possibly even within the same organisation. In fact, it was the university's cabinet office accreditation that attracted me to this particular MBA. Most of the business school's home students follow the part-time MBA in tandem with their existing job, but I was lucky enough to be given a year's unpaid leave by my employers and they also contributed to my course fees. I'm so grateful for that, its been a fantastic experience. It would be wonderful if more public sector employers would consider this kind of move.
