The provision of online resources for external studies was generally very good. Web based forums were great - where the lecturers became involved which was most of the time. However the standard of the course appears to be dropping with very few electives offered in 2009 and no quality control regarding teaching and examining.

I found no problems with the admissions process. It is fairly flexible and easy to follow. However I had a previous degree so I cannot comment on the process of being admitted on the basis of work experience. It is not difficult to contact the student centre and there is a system to ensure no enquiry is lost.

I received a Commonwealth Education Scholarship which was administered by the university. No additional scholarships or funding were available for my course. Search the lists of available funding for your course and apply as early as possible.

The course was very interesting although the standard of lecturers varied. Some were excellent helpful and insightful others seemed disinterested in passing on their knowledge. The difficult lecturers were in the minority but unfortunately they tended to teach compulsory subjects. The biggest tip I have is to find a group of people to communicate with (online or in person) and keep in contact with them throughout the degree. Such a group is invaluable for brainstorming assignments and exams giving opinions on elective subjects and generally helping external students to feel less isolated.

I attended 4 residential schools but did not stay on campus. Campus life appears to be centred around school leaver students. Unless you already live in teh New England region I would say UNE is best suited to external students.

Job prospects have definitely increased through my study - but this is more about the degree than the university. There are limited opportunities through alumni or the university. However the opportunities whcih do exist are fairly well publicised so that students can take advantage of them. Studying externally allowed me to take on a relevant job without having to arrange it around class hours. This has really helped my career prospects.
