Education the university is well noted for it is mba program and for it's telecommunications and networks track.. however since i am a ce major i can't assure u guys that this is true ... one thing i must say though is that the standard of education is better compared to other universites falling in the same rankings range..

You get to register for courses on the day of your orientation itself. There are infact two orienation meetings which you have to attend in the university without fail... one is the general orientation where students of all departments are together given information regarding the university, insurance, housing, etc and a couple more general things.. once that is done you will have your own department orientation (after a gap of an hour or two) where you will get to meet up with your graduate advisors. There you will be asked to fill out the courses you plan on registering for for the fall semester on a sheet and if they feel that you meet the requirements (prerequisites) and if the courses are appropriate for your degree plan they would approve your coursework plan. Please note that you cannot register for classes unless you get the consent of your advisor. so you are gonna have to decide on your course prior to attending the meeting... also keeps some backup courses.. Each course has a fixed number of students that can register for it... so if the limit is reached, then you wont get to register for the course... Since there are a lot of CS students ... usually CS courses get closed quickly... make sure you guys have a couple of backups just in case..once you get to UTD you will be having a meeting with senior students prior to orientation and they will be able to advise you on the course selection... so don't worry too much about it... just have an idea about the various courses available and their timings before you attend the meeting ... once you get your courses approved by your advisor you are going to have to go and register for the courses(for CE and EE guys cathy gribble does this). Please note that every students has some prior holds.. some of which are: 1)International orientation hold 2)Department orientation hold 3)Transcripts hold 4)Final degree hold 5)TB hold 6)Engineering and computer science hold unless you have these holds waived you cannot register for courses... you could go and check out the holds you have by visiting the ISS link on the UTD website... the first two holds mentioned above get waived once you attend the general and departmental orientations..the third hold gets waived when you submit your final year transcripts ... in case you have done this earlier you wont have this hold...the fourth hold would require you to submit a copy of your final year degree certificate... (most of you wont get your final degree as soon as you graduate so you have the option of submitting the final degree certificate prior to the spring semester...) make sure you have all your certificates in a sealed and attested envelope the TB hold as you probably know requires you to submit the TB test... i am not sure about the final hold... i got it waived automatically after attending orientation so guess it shouldnt be a problem as i already mentioned you cannot register for courses unless you get your holds waived so make sure that you get them waived prior to registration. Once you have registered for courses you would have to pay the tuition fee within three days... after which your courses get automatically dropped on nonpayment... once you have registered for a course and after attending the class you feel you are not happy with the professor or the course for some reason then you could drop the course and get a full refund.. but you have to make sure that you do this prior to census day (last date for dropping a course with full refund)... after which you wont recieve a total refund on dropping a course...in case you plan on coming a bit late to utd then you could also attend the late orientation.. i wouldn't recommend this though as the courses you plan on taking might get filled by then.

Many of you have asked me regarding Aid (TA, RA or fellowship) at University of Texas at Dallas. For people in EE, CE, TE -1) Please go through the information at department website: http://www.ee.utdallas.edu/information.html. Download the Aid information from http://www.ee.utdallas.edu/2007-EE-GradStudentRecruitment-AD.doc. Note: All funded students are supposed to do MS with thesis (or PhD) at UTD ..details on dept website. 2) General steps to get Aid -(a) Decide your area (e.g. VLSI, circuits, communications or signal processing) (b) Go through faculty webpages and shortlist 1-2 professors in your area, who can possibly become your advisors for MS thesis (or PhD research). (c) Email these professors (Max 1 or 2 at a time) and ask them if you can work under them and get Research Assistantship (They can only recommend you for TA or Fellowship .... but these decisions are made at department level). Your mail for (c) should be short (less that 3 para or 2000 characters) and should include ? 1) Why are you interested in this area, what are your goals for doing Masters/PhD, why do you think the professor is suitable to be your advisor? . 2) Most Important- Why should professor choose you? The course Structure for EE CS or TE is generally this way: ppl take 9 credit hours per semester all the grad level (6K) level courses have 3 credits soo if you have a prerequisite it may or may not be counted one 5K level course which is an undergraduate course counts towards your credits there are in total 33 credit hours. Now there are no specific school timings like if you have a class of X course at monday 3:00 PM then you need to go at that time. else you dont have to be in school. but still most of the time you will be spending in school. Now what do i mean by 5K and 6K level courses: 5K level course is like CS5343 which is 5K level course and that is undergrad course but one of those 5K level courses counts towards your GPA as well as 3 credit hours. 6K level course is like CS 6350 which is a 6K level course which counts towards your GPA it has 3 credit hours internships students on a f1 visa become eligible for an internship once they complete two long semesters (fall and spring are long semesters while summer is a short semester) in addition different departments have different rules - the ce department requires that students should complete 3 out of the 4 core courses to become eligible, the cs department requires students to complete 3 6000 level courses, the ee dept requires 6 6000 level courses etc... the univ does have events like the career fair where a number of students manage to get internships... those who don't, apply on their own either by filling out applications on the company's websites or by asking seniors already working to forward their resumes... and counts towards that as well. Expenses: as a masters student you are required to complete 11 courses (this excludes any prerequisites u might have been given. cs students generally have a technical English course and guys shifting from ee to ce generally have operating systems and data structures as prereqs. for guys moving from ee to cs or te .. u might be given as many as 6 prereqs) u could get these courses waived if u have already done them in ur undergrad and the course is clearly mentioned in your transcripts.. don't forget to bring a copy of ur syllabus attested by a school official (preferably the principal). you have to pay around 6500 for 3 courses and this includes insurance costs. you will have to pay extra for any prerequisites u have but these wont be counted towards ur gpa or graduation.

HOUSING OPTIONS pepper place on renner road- no bus service available. takes about 10 min to cycle to the university. around 700$ for a 2 bedroom and 500$ for a single bedroom apt. Marquis at waterview on renner road- takes around 5-10 min to cycle to the university. No bus service available. Chatam court on Mccallum- Bus service available. First of all utd is small... when i say small i mean it is infact smaller than a couple of indian universities ..jntu for example. though it boasts of about a 500 acre campus... half of it is the oncampus housing (waterview). so in case u r dreamin of spending two years in a big posh university then utd is not the place for u..The pickup/temporary accommodation request link has been activated and is fully operational starting today. You will be able to access it via the UTD ISA website www.utdisa.org. Here is a direct link to the page in case you have trouble locating it http://www.utdisa.org/Login.aspx .
