I would welcome for the new comers to this university as this is an average graded university with a scope of getting on-campus jobs when compared to other universities in USA.
I had to give TOEFL and GRE. We have to clear TOEFL (min 217) and GRE (min 1000) to get an admission without any problems. But to get into computer science there are few extra requirements which are to be met like TOEFL - Paragraph writing (min 5.0 out of 6.0), GRE 20 points minimum in each category (verbal, analytics, etc.,). I used to prepare for this by having 1 hour session dedicated for each GRE, TOEFL. I did attend coaching classes for these which helped in setting an initial path but lot of them need to be learnt by self preparation. We need an F1 VISA to enter US and we need to carry all documents handy for the VISA interview to get it cleared. You should not get into a situation wherein you lost your chances just by missing some documents. My VISA interview was pretty quick (finished within 1 minute) and went smooth. I was asked for the documents and in the meantime they asked me couple of questions a) why do you want to go to US. b) How long are you planning to stay there? It was not that easy to get tickets with good deals even though I came to know 2 months prior to my departure to US. I went with an Airline consultant and I was not given any concession or student discount. My flight (Air India) happened to be from Hyderabad to Detroit with stops in Mumbai, Frankfurt and Chicago (Port of Entry). I landed in Detroit (DTW) where some of the members of Indian Students Association of my University were there to receive me. I did not have any problems reaching to the university as it was not that far (roughly 15 miles from Airport). I did not face with any baggage problems though my baggage was little excess. No issues at the immigration services counter.
I am happy with the infrastructure and the way program was structured but there were not many options of choosing a subject for the semester. Professors were excellent and work load given by them was also manageable.
I lived off-campus with certain other guys - four of them are seniors in the same university and 1 fresher. Being an well established University the infrastructure (library, lecture halls, etc.) was good. It was easy to get on-campus jobs compared with other universities. It was a quite lively environment with lot of students. As this city Ypsilanti is in the north part of US, it was very cold in winter and pretty good in summer. The night life was also quite enjoyable as there is a city by name Ann Arbor which has lot of restaurants, pubs, and dance-clubs to enjoy and hang out. There is an organization called Office of International Students (OIS) which used to handle all academic advising and cultural events.
There is a campus recruiting placement cell in our university which conducts job fairs in the university but this is not that helpful to get into job. They do Resume validations/corrections for applying but the companies which come for placements are small companies and there is less scope of getting through it. The alumni allotted for this is reactive but not that intensified to get major companies.
