It was around 2 years ago when I was looking for universities in United States. I ended up with 10 universities to be on my list. One of them was California State University, Chico. It was the one I ended up going to for my masters. Chico State thats what it is called. It is a great place to study. I feel very lucky to choose this University. It is not a very huge university but it has a very good education system. It provides you all what one is looking for in a University. Apart from University Chico is a small college town which makes it more attractive. Everything revolves around university itself. Weather is very nice all around the year apart from 2 months summer; however I found summer to be more fun because of Thursday farmers market. It also gives you other opportunities to explore with your career goals. There are so many extra curricular activity offered you can never stop learning. After coming to Chico State I feel like learning each and everything.
Getting admission totally depend on your various scores, however I will say it was little easy to get in compared to other universities. It was a very simple application process and one day I got my I-20, it was the first one. Chico State has special International student representative that helps answering any questions from life in Chico to gaining admission in Chico. Also some of the students have formed groups that help new students with temporary accommodations, pickups and all. My travel experience was pretty good, I enjoyed every minute of it. Everything seems to be new and exciting lot of new stuff to learn, new culture, different food, etc.
It is quite difficult for Funding and Scholarships in CSU system itself. However as compared to other universities CSU system charges very nominal fees. There are chances to get some aid after first semester depending on your performance. However people getting this aid are very few.
As in my case computer science offers Varity of courses. The best part is if you feel that some course is not offered in this university then you can also take course from some other university and that will be counted in your program. Computer science department is very flexible with courses. I really liked some of the professors. Like one of my professor who taught us Computer Architecture was so good that I actually liked the course, which I never use to like until I took this class with him. It was a great experience.
Chico is really a fun place apart from studies. There are tons of activities to do. It has a creek swimming pool; it is a good attraction for summers. Believe me its huge and the best part is its all natural flowing water, so your eyes wont hurt after coming out of it. There is Bidwell Park that is one of the largest parks in US. Very beautiful and weather is very pleasant all around the year. It is little cold in winters but doesnt snow, though if you like to see snow then just drive 45 miles from Chico and you can see it. People in Chico are extremely friendly, In Chico I never felt away from home. Everybody is so friendly and helpful you never miss home. Actually after completing my master I wasnt feeling like leaving Chico, but I guess life moves on. You have to keep moving in life.
Chico is around 180 miles away from the heart of Silicon Valley. Chico State Career Fair always has more than 100 companies coming to Chico for recruiting students. Being close to Silicon Valley make Chico State more attractive since living cost is very low and you are not far away from Silicon Valley.
