I?ve always loved the idea of teaching but I was scared to actually study teaching because I worried that I wouldn?t be good with kids- I didn?t know much about them! But after meeting a new friend who had just become a qualified teacher I thought I?d give this course a go. After all, I had my undergraduate degree and it would only take a year. Plus, I could work at night in a waitressing job. So, I did it. I applied, I got in and I moved to Ballarat. My new life completely began. Right from the start of the course I began teaching rounds, I was thrown in the deep end. But surprisingly, I loved it. The whole year passed as a blur of study, teaching rounds, making new friends and just having fun in Ballarat and then before I knew it I was a qualified teacher. The year just flew by and now I?m a teacher! I still pinch myself sometimes, I can?t believe it actually happened and so quickly at that. But I do sometimes miss the course, it was great
Getting in to the course was easy. As it?s a postgraduate course, I just sent a direct application form to the university. I was worried that I wouldn?t get in as I hadn?t had any experience with kids and I thought that was an important prerequisite. So as soon as I knew I wanted to do the course, I asked some family friends if I could babysit their kids. I did, I gained some experience and I was able to put them down as referee, which was good.
I checked before I applied and found that there were no real scholarships available to me. There was only one, a womens? scholarship and the criteria for it was that you had to have had experienced hardships at university and that didn?t include me (unless a kinda mean lecturer who picked on me when I was late counts!)
The study was amazing. The tutors and lecturers were so friendly, they all seemed to go the extra mile for students. I think postgraduate study is different to undergrad as well, there seems to be this level of trust and a mature relationship between student and academic. This course is definitely value for money because it is almost certain that graduates will be able to find a job when they finish.
Studying at Ballarat Uni was way better than what I thought. I imagined because it seemed so isolated from Melbourne that it would be a bit boring, bit country town. Well it is a country town I guess, but the social aspect for uni was amazing, so fun. Seriously, if you do go to Ballarat Uni just completely emerge yourself in the scene- it makes uni so much better when you have cool friends there! But a word of warning, go easy on weeknight pub crawls if you have class the next morning because some lecturers very much enjoy asking tired students lots of questions. And if you fall asleep in a lecture, you?re sure to be picked on by a lecturer. How do I know? It may have happened to me..... For accommodation Ballarat is amazingly cheap. I shared a beautiful house with some girls for only $60 each a week. You couldn?t get a shoebox for that back home.
Because of this course, my job prospects are excellent! Teachers are always in demand in Australia and lots of other places in the world, especially the UK apparently. So I picked an excellent course in terms of international job opportunities, which suits me very well! There?s also a really good job support network at Ballarat Uni but I was lucky, I didn?t need them as I had already secured a part time job at one the schools I went to on my teaching rounds.
