University of Illinois' programs are ranked one of the top in the world and the standard of education and research are top-notch. The university experience in amazing in terms of learning and meeting new people. There is nothing specific which needs to be improved at University of Illinois. UIUC is a highly research oriented university and students who get admitted here are expected to maintain real high standards. The professors expect a lot from the students. So prepare to work hard if you are planning to come to University of Illinois.
UIUC has one of the lowest admit rates in USA. However, in UIUC, professors can get admits to students if they want to. So I'd suggest you talk to some professor in the university on common research interests. If he agrees to take you in as his student, then he can get you an admit into the university. Otherwise, admits are very selective. They are selective in their admits but the funding scenario is really good. The visa process was fairly simple and no questions were asked during the interview because UIUC is highly regarded. Traveling to UIUC was also fairly easy. But since UIUC is not in a major city, you need to take a bus from Chicago. I'd suggest students to look for and block apartments before landing in the USA.
All graduate students get funding and tuition waivers on way or the other.
The course work is pretty much research oriented for graduate students. They expect you to read lots of research and journal papers and write reviews. Many graduate courses require you to complete a project alongwith. Grades are normally not that important and what you learn out of the course is more important. Usually there will be four hours per week for each course taken. The professors are really good and helpful and they know a lot of stuff. My advice regarding courses would be never to bite more than you can chew. Ask your seniors about how heavy a particular course would be. Do not take two heavy courses in the same semester and you'd suffer.
UIUC has one of the largest recreation centers with a three floor gym and two swimming pools. UIUC is also one of the largest campuses and has the largest greek system. There are many clubs one can be a part of. However, the university is situated in the small towns of Urbana and Champaign. The nearest city is Chicago which is 3 hours away. Accommodation is fairly cheap in Champaign (depending on how close you live to the university). There are many international students here and the general public is very friendly and helpful. A very good atmosphere for any student to be in.
UIUC has a career services center which helps you find a job. There are career fairs every semester where students and recruiters come together. There is also an Alumni association for each department. For graduate students, jobs are easy to get through professor contacts (as the professors in UIUC are highly regarded and have many contacts in the industry).
