I am really happy with the way my program is structured. TAMU is a really good university with modern state of art facilities. Its a safe bet for international students.
I had to take the GRE and TOEFL tests. For GRE, I used a book called Barrons, nothing for TOEFL. I actually did attend a coaching class for GRE for eight months. I believe educational counseling is not a very useful thing. Everything can be learned by us online, which is why I didnt use any. I needed a F-1 visa. I had all my documents both financial and academic, ready for the interview. That is what I concentrated on. With that in hand, I dont think any question wouldve bothered me a lot. My interview experience was quite good. It was short and crisp. Tickets are available in plenty. Only thing is you must know to look for the good deal. I flew AIR FRANCE. The flight was definitely not the best, compared to some of my other flights. I dont think airlines offer student fairs. At least the ones I looked at such as Lufthansa, American, Air France didnt. I landed at Houston airport. Its an hours drive away from my institution. My baggage came with me Chennai, Paris and then Houston. No excess baggage was allowed in Air France. I was allowed 2 bags, each weighing 23 kg. One of my bags was 28 kg while my other was 32 kg in weight. So, I had to pay a penalty of Rs.2750. There werent any issues at immigration for me. Since the city I landed in was not my universitys location, it is quite natural that I couldnt expect any kind of welcome from my university. I didnt.
For IE grads assistantships are pretty hard to find.
I am happy with the way my program is structured. The professors are really good. Lecture halls are modern with state of art facilities. Library service is good. For sports they have a recreation center which is massive and good.
I am staying off campus. Off campus is good and comparatively cheap. I would rate moderate to get hold of part time jobs. Social scene is very good, lot of Indians around and its fun all the time. Night life is very safe, no worries. Climate is pretty much Indian. There is an International student society. They handle all the Indian special occasions and also other important occasion.
There is a career center at the university. For international students to get jobs, you have to take into account a huge number of things. Some factors are the brand name of the company, its size, qualification and achievement of the students, current scenario/trend in the US about hiring international students. A career fair is held each semester. Lots of companies come there, talk to students and give them interviews if theyre interested. There is also an online resume drop-off site maintained by the university which we can use to contact some companies which do not come to the fair. A few companies like Dell, Intel and Boeing come here. They have varied views on hiring international students though. One can obtain a work permit depending on the companys brand name, size, age, its pull with the visa people. Usually, its easier to land a work visa if youre in a prominent company, compared to a start-up. Personally, I havent had a lot of help from the University Alumni. But again, this is a university. It has a HUGE number of courses, departments, programs and people. Someone must be helping somewhere.
